Vertical Blue is a small-scale aquaponics system designed for urban balconies, addressing the challenges of farming in limited spaces, especially in high-rise buildings. In densely populated cities like Bangalore, where traditional farming is difficult, Vertical Blue offers a sustainable solution by combining fish and plant cultivation into a self-sustaining ecosystem.

Using recycled materials such as plastic drums, pipes, and clay balls for filtration, the system efficiently circulates water without requiring replacement for over 12 months, maintaining optimal pH levels. Various fish species, including Redbelly and Guppies, are used, with the system even incorporating kitchen food waste as fish feed.

Though plants initially showed more root than leaf growth, plans to increase fish for higher nitrate production are in progress. Future improvements include integrating solar power for the pump, reducing electricity use and making the system more eco-friendly. Vertical Blue showcases how small urban spaces can be transformed into sustainable, productive ecosystems, promoting urban farming.
